World Mental Health Day: Searching For Peace In The Rubble



World Mental Health Day is observed annually on every 10th day of October. The first world mental health day was held in 1992.

This global and annual commemoration is originally dedicated to sensitizing all on mental health as well as fighting the stigma that comes with it. However, for the 2017 theme, WHO is set to address Mental health in the workplace.

We may not know it but mental health takes different patterns and degrees that everyone at some point is a patient. It is worse in the modern time. Thus the need to be drastically addressed now.

Mental health refers to the state of psychological well-being. It encompasses how one handles stress in a way that it does not affect harmony and productivity in life.

According to WHO,

“Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”

As it concerns this year’s theme, there is a need for sound mental health at workplaces. Logically, the fewer cases of anxiety and depression in the workforce, the more productivity we have.

Each day comes with its own stress, and mental stress happens to be the worst kind. It appears that every stage of life comes with its stress package. Looking at it from the other way, the common goal of all our pursuits and decision is peace, though in disguise.

For instance, you do multiple jobs just to have that peace of mind that your rent will be ready in due time. But while reaching for this truth, every other thing around you seems to be upside down and perhaps some duties compromised. All these may lead to overwhelming stress.

There is, however, a level of stress that is normal. What is dangerous is having an accumulation of it with no sort of management.



World Mental Health Day

These days we find people worrying about the economy, bills, debts, pressure from family and even social media-induced stress. Adding that to the normal stress from work poses disaster for the establishment. Juggling both inner and external clutters limits productivity at work.

Medics suggest that genes, history of abuse and family history may affect mental health. Mental balance and illnesses are serious disorders which alter both cognitive and behavioral patterns.

WHO notes that there is an alarming rise in anxiety and depression cases.

“Globally, more than 300 million people suffer from depression, the leading cause of disability. More than 260 million are living with anxiety disorders. Many of these people live with both. A recent WHO-led study estimates that depression and anxiety disorders cost the global economy US$ 1 trillion each year in lost productivity.”

For the 25th anniversary of World Mental Health Day, the international health organization calls for employers to prioritize the mental health of their workers.

They can do this by introducing initiatives to promote the mental wellbeing of their workers. Also, they can support employees who have mental disorders.

Several platforms have sprung up from over 2 decades of sensitization to defend the rights and welfare of people with diagnosed mental illnesses.

Mental health care has been made more available through NHS. It is worthy to mention the common challenge of funding to keep these services running.

On that note, private partnerships and philanthropic donations are welcome.
