Xiumin is a South Korean singer and actor, who is also among the members of the South Korean-Chinese boy band Exo. Xiumin is also part of the Exo sub-group Exo-M and its sub-unit Exo-CBX. Since he came on the scene in 2012, his successful musical career has branched into acting, Tv shows, documentaries, several other showbiz ventures and has won him two major awards; Award for SNS Web Drama at the 4th APAN Star Awards in 2015, and Most Popular Singer at the Click! Who is Xiumin and How Old is He?
Xiumin was born—Kim Min-Seok—in Guri, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, on March 26, 1990. Although there are no details about his childhood, early education, parents or what they did for a living, we know, however, that he attended Catholic Kwandong University. Xiumin is also schooled in the martial arts and holds a black belt in Kendo and Taekwondo. More so, he is trained in Wushu and Fencing.
While 2012 seems to be his big break, Xiumin has been on the scene much earlier than that. In 2008, Xiumin first auditioned for JYP but got rejected. In the same year, he entered for the SM Everything Contest and emerged the first runner up. Subsequently, he became a trainee under SM Entertainment’s Casting System. In January 2012, the singer was unveiled as the seventh member of the South Korean-Chinese boy group Exo. The group released its debut three months later on April 8, 2012. The following year, Xiumin guest-appeared alongside Korean actress Kim Yoo-Jung in the music video for the song Gone by South Korean singer Jin.
2015 came with another fame for Xiumin, after he portrayed the character of Aquila in the SM Entertainment musical School OZ. An appearance he made alongside labelmates Luna, Suho, Seulgi, Changmin, and Key. In October of that year, Xiumin appeared in the lead role in the web drama Falling for Challenge. He starred alongside actress Kim So-eun. 2015 was also the year he released his first solo song You Are the One which became a soundtrack for Falling for Challenge. Falling for Challenge will always go down as a defining project for Xiumin as it became the most-watched web drama in South Korea in 2015; garnering 20 million views within 17 days.
To add to his musical footprint, Xiumin got featured in Jimin’s solo single Call You Bae and was also featured in the music video. That was in February 2016. In July of that year, Xiumin made his first appearance on the big screen in the South Korean film Seondal: The Man Who Sells the River, he starred alongside Yoo Seung-ho. The following month, August, he teamed up with fellow Exo members Chen, and Baekhyun to produce the original soundtrack for the Tv series Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. In October 2016, Xiumin, alongside fellow Exo artists, Chen and Baekhyun, were announced as members of Exo’s first official sub-unit Exo-CBX. The group released their song, Hey Mama!, on October 31.
Away from music now. In May 2019, Xiumin enlisted for the South Korean mandatory military service. But not after entertaining fans with a series of concerts which include Exo-CBX’s Magical Circus (Special Edition) concert in Japan and his solo fan meeting concert titled Xiuweet Time, at Jamsil Arena. Many fans had thought the enlistment would slow his career for a while, but nothing could be farther from the truth. After his enlistment, Xiumin released his debut solo single, You, on May 9. More recently, it was announced that Xiumin will be starring in the new army musical titled Return: The Promise of That Day. He will star alongside singers Onew and Yoon Ji-sung. The project will run from October 22 to December 1, 2019, at the Olympic Park’s Woori Art Hall in Seoul.
