If you’ve seen the Sci-Fi film, Chappie, then you’ll probably recognize Yolandi Visser, the girlfriend to meta-fictional character, Ninja. Chappie the robot affectionately calls her “mummy”. Although Chappie would be Visser’s major hit yet in the movie arena, acting isn’t her first love. At heart, Visser is a rapper, singer-songwriter, and music video director who sings as the female vocalist in the rap-rave group, Die Antwoord.

Yolandi Visser’s Age and Early Life
Yolandi Visser was born and named Anri du Toit in Port Alfred, South Africa, on December 1, 1984. She, alongside her older brother, Leon, were adopted and catered for by a local Christian minister and his wife. Unfortunately, Leon passed on in 2015.
Visser spent most of her early life in Port Alfred where she attended St. Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls. After graduating from high school, Visser enrolled at the Lady Grey Arts Academy where she majored in music.
Yolandi Visser got her start quite early as a musician. She began as a member of the music and art group, The Constructus Corporation. She would later join the South African ‘corporate’ hip-hop group MaxNormal.TV, where she became an assistant to the leader, Max Normal. In 2008, Yolandi alongside three others including Toit, Ninja, and her then producer DJ Hi-Tek, formed the rap-rave group, Die Antwoord. When interpreted word for word, Die Antwoord would mean “The Answer”. Die Antwoord’s music is part of the South-African counterculture movement popularly known as Zef. The group launched their first album, $O$, back in 2009.
The album was available online for free and its spread roused international attention when their music video Enter the Ninja was eventually released. In 2011 they founded their own label, Zef Recordz. What followed was the release of their second and third studio albums, Ten$Ion and Donker Mag, in 2012 and 2014 respectively. Their fourth album, Mount Ninji, was released in 2016. In 2019, the group is set to release their fifth album to be titled The House of Zef. In all of their releases, Yolandi Visser’s signatory voice continues to stand out; adding more color to their already overcharged songs. As far as we know, Yolandi Visser has a daughter, Sixteen Jones (born in 2006), from her relationship with fellow singer Watkin Tudor Jones, better known by his stage name, Ninja.
