Georgios Yorgos Lanthimos has written his name on the slates of life as a  Greek film, video and theatre director, producer, and screenwriter. He is not one of the many faces we see on sets today but is one of the few who has successfully built an acting career working behind the scenes. For his remarkable performances, he has been nominated thrice for the Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best Picture, and Best Director.

The exact day and date the actor was born are not known, however, records have it that he was born sometime in 1973. His father, Antonis Lanthimos was a sportsman who played basketball for Pagrati B.C and a basketball teacher in Moraitis School. Yorgos was raised solely by his mom after his parents got divorced. Sadly, his mom’s death when he was 17 led him to mature quickly. Although, he got little stipends from one of his close relatives. The actor has described his formative years as a seismic experience that molded him to be responsible.

Regarding his educational details, he graduated with a Business administration degree from Moraitis school. Following his father’s footsteps, he was a basketballer for the Pagrati B.C. Upon all his involvement with the school, he never found satisfaction and eventually opted out of everything. He later went ahead to study directing for film and television at Hellenic Cinema and Television school Stavrakos.

It was during the days of hustling as a teen that Yorgos Lanthimos took the decision of going into the art world. He started with the making of scary commercials with Efthymis Filippou; a co-writer. With this co-writer, he learned acting economy management and till date, doesn’t use unnecessary makeup and lighting during the production of most of his movies. At first, Yorgos Lanthimos never taught of making it big with his play in commercials but as we all know, it is inevitable for a good piece to hardly get unnoticed. So, with his short film ads, he gained the attention of a few international bodies. Then, he decided to hit it big and further moved to London in 2011.

Prior to the period, he got caught with media attention, Yorgos Lanthimos began his film career with My Best Friend and was followed by the experimental film Kinetta. Both movies got rave reviews and were noted for their distinct features. He subsequently released his third movie, Dogtooth and like expected, the movie was also a glam. It won the Prix U Certain Regard and qualified for the 83rd Academy Awards nominations for Best Foreign Language Film.

While that movie was still been praised, he acted and co-produced the movie, Attenberg, and Alps (2011). Alps during the 68th Venice International Film Festival emerged as the winner of the Osella Award for Best Screenplay. Yorgos Lanthimos was later awarded the ARTE International Award as Best CineMart Project for 2013 at the 42nd International Film Festival Rotterdam for his script on the movie; The Lobster. Also, Lobster won the Jury Prize for the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. In 2018, the film director released his movie, Favorite which later emerged as the Grand Jury Prize.

Net Worth of The Greek Film Director
