A Complete List of Federal Universities In Nigeria

The history of public universities in Nigeria dates back to 1948 with the establishment of University College, Ibadan. The UCI which was an affiliate of the University of London was a strong pointer to the importance of higher education as a viable means of enhancing unprecedented growth in various societies of the nation. To further ascertain the need for more higher education, the Federal Government commissioned an inquiry (the Ashby Commission) in April 1959 to come forth with a viable report on the subject. The submissions and implementation of the Ashby report brought about the establishment of higher institutions in various regions of the country: the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife) for the Western Region, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria for the Northern region and, of course, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka for the Eastern region.

While the aforementioned institutions represented the various regions of Nigeria, UCI and the University of Lagos became the first two federal universities in Nigeria. Other Universities began to spring up afterward. Notably, the oil boom years of the 1970s encouraged the expansion of federal universities in Nigeria. Today, the country boast of 44 full-fledged universities accredited by the National University Commission (NUC). This article gives you a complete list of federal Universities in Nigeria plus some important information about what makes each accredited university unique.
