South African University Application Dates for 2022

It is important for every high school graduate who intends to get admission into any of the universities in South Africa to start out early. This is because applications into South African universities end by November each year while some end as early as August. Being aware of the application deadline for your desired institution is paramount so that you don’t miss out on your admission or be caught in the web of late entry.

That being said, it is no longer news that most universities in SA had long begun the admission process for 2022. So, if you desire to get into any of the 26 public universities in South Africa come 2022, you should be conversant with the application dates and deadlines. Detailed List Of South African Universities Open For Application In 2022

1. The University of Cape Town

Located in Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa, the University of Cape Town (UCT) was founded in 1829 as first a college before it over the year metamorphosed into a full-fledged university. UCT is a public research university that prides itself as not only the oldest university in South Africa but also as the second oldest extant university in Africa.

Admission requirements into UTC for 2022 differ depending on the course of study an applicant is applying for.

Bachelor’s Degree Study

For bachelor degree courses, applicants should meet the following requirements to be eligible to apply:

  1. Applicants with non-South African school-leaving certificates must qualify for a matriculation exemption certificate
  2. Applicants with a South African Senior Certificate need matriculation endorsement.

Applicants applying for undergraduate diploma courses must have a National Senior Certificate (NSC) certified by Umalusi with an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40-49%) or better in 4 recognized NSC 20-credit subjects to be eligible to apply.

  • For applicants finishing secondary school in 2021, all grade 12 interim results or predicted scores in the case of non-NSC candidates: 31 October 2021

2. Stellenbosch University

Basic General Application Requirements

South Africans

• A National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Independent Examinations Board (IEB) school-leaving certificate as certified by Umalusi for admission to bachelor’s degree studies

• Writing of the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) required by your chosen program (only School of Tomorrow applicants)

International Students

The academic record of applicants, who apply with an international examination qualification, will be evaluated by the Admission Office in collaboration with Stellenbosch University International.

Basic Requirements for a Bachelor’s Degree

South Africans
  • 30% for a South African Language of Learning and Teaching (English or Afrikaans), and an achievement rating of 4 (50% – 59%) in four 20-credit subjects.
  • Highest score in Language of Learning and Teaching (Eng or Afr) + (5 x best results in 20-credit subjects excluding Life Orientation, Advanced Mathematics, Mathematics 3 and any other non-NSC subject​s). The total is then divided by 6.
International Students
  • Final school results from International​ Curriculum (Cambridge International, International Baccalaureate, etc.), including School of Tomorrow.
  • Applicants will also have to meet further requirements specific to the program(s) of their choice as set out in the program outlines under the various faculties.

3. University Of Pretoria

The University of Pretoria has existed for over 100 years. It is a world-class institute with the second oldest veterinary school in Africa (established in 1920) and the only veterinary school in South Africa. The University is organized into nine faculties and a business school.

Basic General Application Requirements

To be eligible to apply for admission into the Unversity of Pretoria, candidates must meet the minimum requirements for degree studies, this is in addition to the minimum requirements for the relevant programme.

The calculation of an Admission Point Score (APS) is based on a candidate’s achievement
in any SIX recognized NSC 20-credit subjects by using the NSC seven-point rating scale.
Life Orientation is a 10-credit subject and may not be used for calculating the APS. Life
Orientation is also not a faculty-specific subject requirement.

4. University of the Witwatersrand

5. University of Fort Hare

The University of Fort Hare is a public university located in Alice, Eastern Cape. Basic General Application Requirements

Bachelor Degrees
  • Minimum of level 4 in English 1st Additional Language or
  • Minimum of level 3 in English Home Language.
  • Minimum of Level 4 or better in four 20-credit subjects from the designated list, excluding Life Orientation
  • Pass NSC with an achievement rating of 4 (50-59%) or more in 4 (four) subjects
Diploma Programmes

Matured Applicants

All matured applicants (those turning 23 years by the time of registration) must possess

  • Minimum of level 4 in English 1st Additional Language or

  • Minimum of Level 4 or better in four 20-credit subjects from the designated list, excluding Life Orientation before being considered for admission into mainstream programmes.  They need to apply for conditional exemption from HESA.

Applicants seeking admission into a degree programme must ensure that four of their seven subjects are from this designated list.

International Students

  1. Undergraduates
  • All applicants with non-South African school-leaving require a certificate of exemption from the Matriculation Board of South Africa for admission into an undergraduate qualification.

The University of Fort Hare will also submit applications to the Matriculation Board on behalf of the applicant on submission of the following:

  • Form M30E (also available from the matriculation board website); Copies of educational qualification (certified at the University); Copy of Passport or birth certificate (certified at the University);
  • Exemption application fee charged at R400.00 (payable at the university)
  • A Matriculation Exemption or Further Education and Training Certificate
  • A standard qualification to study for a degree is a Matriculation endorsement or equivalent.
  • Sworn English translation of documents required where applicable.

6. Tshwane University of Technology

Since its inception in 2004 by the merging of three institutions: Technikon Northern Gauteng, Technikon North-West, and Technikon Pretoria, TUT has provided nothing but a world-class learning experience to students. Basic General Application Requirements

  • A pass mark in English at Senior Certificate level (minimum additional language; certain programmes may require first or home language status)
  • Each course has its own specific admission requirements.
  • Prospective students should note that the admission requirements of individual programmes could change from year to year.
  • For some programmes, students will be required to write an admission test, which will determine whether they will be admitted to the programme, or whether it will be recommended to them that they enrol for a relevant foundation course.
  • All learners are required to take one of the two subjects for NSC-G purposes

14. Vaal University of Technology

Vaal is one of the largest residential Universities of Technology in SA, teaching over 300 courses. General Basic Application Requirements

Applicants desiring to be admitted into the prestigious Vaal University must possess the following:

  • Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification. A pass mark is required in at least one of the languages of instruction (English) of the university at Higher Grade (HG) or Standard Grade (SG).
  • An applicant who offers an N3 qualification as an entrance requirement must have at least four subjects, plus pass marks in two official languages (of which one must be English), at least at Senior Certificate level (SG).
  • Applicants applying for Engineering, Applied, and Computer Sciences, must possess the minimum required symbol for Mathematics, Physical Science, and in certain cases, English, are HG (E) or SG(C).
  • For other faculties and depending on the course an applicant wants to apply for, the average recommended subjects are: Mathematics, Business Economics, Accounting, Physical Science, Clothing and Needlework, Economics, Typing, Biology, Home Economics, and Art.

Older Applicants

An applicant who is at least 23 years of age may apply for conditional admission, however, the application must be accompanied by the following:

  • A certificate stating formal qualifications.
  • Recommendation from the applicant’s employer stating that he/she has the necessary experience and communication abilities to complete the proposed instructional programme successfully.
  • If an application is conditionally approved, the candidate shall only be admitted to the second semester/year of study, provided that the full first year/semester course has been completed successfully

General Basic Application Requirements

Applicants who wish to study at the University of Free State need to meet the following requirements:

  • An NSC or NCV with an endorsement that allows entrance to degree studies (Bachelor’s degree) or an equivalent qualification;
  • Meet all the minimum admission requirements for the programme they intend to study.
  • Have a minimum level of 4 (50%) in English Home Language or English First Additional Language
  • Pass certain school subjects with a minimum level of achievement in order to take a certain university module. For example, applicants must possess a mark of 70% for Mathematics in Grade 12 if they plan to study BSc majoring in Physics with Engineering
    subjects.

21. Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University

Named after Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi and located at Umlazi Township, MUT is one out of the 6 most recognized universities of technology in the whole of South Africa. Existing for over four decades and counting, MUT has 3 faculties namely Engineering, Management Sciences, and Natural Sciences. It has a competitive advantage of a formalized Work Integrated Learning (WIL) programme which has been to enable students to experience the world of work, which is mandatory, before they can be awarded a degree.

General Basic Application Requirements

Minimum admission requirements for anyone desiring to study in MUT must include the following:

  • English Home Language or First Additional Language, level 4 pass
  • Specific subject combination and pass level relevant to the qualification
  • A minimum of 5 subjects with level 4 pass for diploma study and level 3 for Access Courses
  • National Senior Certificate with a diploma pass or N3 with 50% pass in Mathematics and English
  • Minimum points as per faculty requirement and as listed on the CAO handbook

It is important to note that admission requirements into MUT most often are based on the faculty’s calculation of aggregate calculated from the best five subjects presented by the prospective student. Applicants should, however, note that some departments administer a compulsory entrance test before considering students for admission.

25. Sol Plaatje University

The Sol Plaatje University, also known as the University of the Northern Cape, is one of the newest universities in South Africa. Sol was established in Kimberley, South Africa, in 2014, after receiving a political endorsement in 2012 under the leadership of Jacob Zuma. The student strength of the institution is projected to increase by about 7,500 by 2024.
