Joe Bonamassa was born Joseph Leonard Bonamassa in Utica, New York, on 8th May 1977, to his parents Len and Debra Bonamassa. He began to play the guitar at the age of 4. Seeing his potential, his father encouraged him to seek a career in music.

Joe Bonamassa was greatly influenced by the exceptional works of the British blues-rock records of legendary Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, all thanks to his father, who has been the backbone of his music career right from the get-go and also put him under the tutelage of the great American guitarist Danny Gatton at the age of 11.
