What are SA Coins?

SA coins are value coins used as a store of wealth. These coins have a rich history behind them and with the right knowledge, can be traded just like forex and cryptocurrency. While valuable coins in other countries are rare to find thereby increasing their monetary value, SA coins are constantly being produced by the South African Mint Company.

Like other rare coins and artifacts, SA coins increase in value over time, and collectors often acquire these coins and keep them with the intent to exchange them when the market price is favorable.

Wanted SA Coins Price List

SA coins are considered valuable because of the materials used in making them, like silver, gold, and other measurable materials. The price value of SA coins is dependent on various factors like how rare they are, how available the coins are, the cost of the materials used in making the coins, and the level of demand.

Below is a comprehensive list of the most wanted SA coins.

1. 1902 VeldPond

There were only 986 pieces of the 1902 VeldPond coin made during the Boer-British war. The coins were made out of a necessity for trade between the Boers and the African tribes while the war with the British raged. Thus, asides from its monetary value, this coin is also memorabilia from the Boer-British war.

The coins were handmade, therefore, their value is highly dependent on their physical condition, with the price ranging between R150,000 to R350,000.

2. 1898 Single Pond Coin

This is considered one of the most expensive coins in South Africa and the world. The coin came into circulation with the arrival of the British to South Africa during the Anglo-Boer war era.

Despite being ranked one of the world’s most expensive coins, the 1898 Single Pond Coin is no longer in the market as the last piece was sold for R20 million to an undisclosed buyer.

3. Krugerrand Coin

The Krugerrand coin was jointly produced by the South African Mint and Rand Refinery and was officially released in 1967. Although different versions of the Krugerrand coin have been manufactured over the years, the newer makes still retain the original physical design which is the picture of Paul Kruger, a former South African president.

Uses of SA Coins

SA coins are primarily used for exchange value, as they can be traded for money like the Rand in South Africa and indeed any other valuable currency in the world. More importantly, South African coins have a lot of historical relevance as they tell the tale of the emergence of South Africa to be the one big united country that it is today.

Similarly, with their historical and cultural relevance, SA Coins can also be gotten and preserved under the right physical conditions as artifacts. In fact, it is a thing of pride to own any of these SA coins but especially the older coins.
