Amelia Vega is one lady who has several claims to fame. The Dominican Republic native is popularly known as the wife of professional basketball player Al Horford, who is a five-time NBA All-Star. However, before she got to walk down the aisle with the love of her life, Vega had already announced herself to the world by clinching the prestigious Miss Universe title in 2003.

Amelia Vega may be most famous for her achievements on the pageantry circuit but that was never her first aspiration in life. As a young girl growing up in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic, she loved music and hoped to become a singer. She, however, realized that she needed some sort of springboard to gain some attention and therefore decided to follow her mother’s footsteps and go into the pageantry circuit. Her mother was a former Miss Dominican Republic titleholder who represented her country at a Miss World Pageant.
Vega started her career by clinching the state title for Santiago in 2002. She then won the Miss Dominican Republic title that same year before proceeding to represent her motherland in the 2003 Miss Universe Pageant held in Panama City.
During the competition, Amelia Vega beat out 71 other hopefuls to clinch the Miss Universe title as she set several records. She made history by being the tallest model to win the title due to her height of 6 feet 2 inches. She also made history as the youngest person to clinch the title in nearly a decade thanks to her being 18 years old.
Amelia Vega’s historic strides did not stop at this juncture. She also emerged as just the third contestant in the competition’s history to go ahead and win the title after winning the national costume segment. For her victory, she was rewarded with a cheque of $250,000 as well as a one-year residency in New York.

Amelia Vega’s time in New York allowed her to rub shoulders with the who-is-who of the fashion industry and she went on to grace the cover of many notable magazines such as Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, and Instyle. She also appeared on the cover of numerous Dominican magazines and was picked to serve as the face of the international cosmetics company, CoverGirl, for four years.

Her NBA Star Husband Also Happens to be From the Dominican Republic
Regarding her personal life, Amelia Vega is happily married to Al Horford, a five-time NBA All-Star who is also a native of the Dominican Republic but relocated to the USA at the age of 14. While stateside, he excelled at high school basketball before joining the University of Florida in 2004. In four years of college basketball, Horford won back to back NCAA championships. He was then drafted into the NBA by the Atlanta Hawks with the 3rd overall pick in the 2007 draft.
Vega and Horford first met during the Latin Pride Awards in Boston in 2007. They first became good friends before a romance was kickstarted around 2010. They later exchanged vows on the 24th of December 2011 in a ceremony held at the home of one of Vega’s uncles in the Dominican Republic. The ceremony was disguised as some sort of party and invitees only got to know what was happening when the couple emerged to say their vows.
Following the nuptials, Al Horford revealed that he was the sort of person that would poke fun at others for saying that they had found the “right one”. He, however, discovered the same thing in Vega and knew that he wanted to marry her right away.
Amelia Vega and Her Husband Have Three Children
Amelia Vega and her husband are proud parents of three children; son Ean Horford Vega (b. 23rd of February 2015) and two daughters named Alia Horford Vega (b. 27th of November 2016) and Ava Horford Vega (b. July 2018). The family resides in Boston where Al once played for the Boston Celtics. They grew to be quite popular in the city due to their fervent support for the local basketball team.
