Da Brat is an American rapper and actress who began her music career in 1992 but got into the larger scene with her debut album Funkdafied (1994). For the album which sold over one million copies, she received a platinum certification, becoming the first female solo rapper and the second overall female rapper (solo or group) to get the certification. The celebrity rapper who has two Grammy Award nominations to boast of is also a three-time Billboard Award winner.
The rap talent was born as Shawntae Harris on April 14, 1974, in Joliet, Illinois. Her parents David Ray McCoy, a Chicago businessman and Nadine Brewer, a Chicago city bus driver, were never married. Growing up, Da Brat was raised by her mother and grandmother. She began her high school education at Kenwood Academy before going off to Academy of Scholastic Achievement from where she graduated in 1992. Though good at what she does, Brat’s career is marred by too many controversies.
Da Brat Net Worth
The veteran American rapper has an estimated net worth of $3 million. Since she was released from prison, she has been involved in a number of things apart from her music career the latest of which is working as a co-host for the Rickey Smiley Morning show and appearing on the reality television series “The Rap Game”.
Why Did She Go to Jail?
In 2000, Da Brat hit a woman with a rum bottle during a dispute over VIP seating in an Atlanta nightclub, inflicting a wound on her head. In 2001, she pleaded guilty to the crime and was sentenced to a year’s probation in addition to paying a $1,000 fine and performing 80 hours of community service.
She was arrested again on October 31, 2007, after she physically assaulted a hostess who is a former NFL cheerleader, Shayla Stevens, at a Halloween gathering at Studio 72 nightclub in Atlanta. The rapper initially had an altercation with the hostess and when the latter went speak to her manager, Da Brat struck her face from behind, with a rum bottle. The rapper was arrested and sent to jail while her victim was rushed to the hospital.
In court, she pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault and was sentenced to three years in prison, seven years of probation and 200 hours of community service. Two years after the incident, while the rapper was still in jail, her victim filed a lawsuit claiming that she suffered permanent facial scarring, mental pain, and neurological impairment.
After serving 21 months, Da Brat was momentarily released in May 2010, as part of a work-release program and in February 2011, she was officially released from prison, having completed her jail term.
On February 24, 2014, her civil trial from the 2007 legal case continued and on the 28th of the same month, Shayla Stevens was awarded $3.7 million to cover her injuries and past/future loss of earnings and an additional $2.7 million as punishment for Da Brat’s actions. This summed up to a grand total of $6.4 million.
The rapper may be facing jail time for disobeying court orders as she is yet to pay her victim the said amount. In a bid to clear herself from paying Shayla, Da Brat filed for bankruptcy in August 2018.
The popular rapper and LisaRaye McCoy, the famous lover of all-white everything, are half-sisters. They share the same father and LisaRaye is the eldest of the two sisters. The rapper has been very vocal about how they share a tight bond. While Da Brat served her time in prison, LisaRaye kept her fans up-to-date on how she was holding up.
LisaRaye McCoy was born on September 23, 1967, in Chicago, Illinois and just like her mother, Katie McCoy, she is a professional model. In addition to that, she is also an actress, businesswoman and a fashion designer. LisaRaye is popular for her roles in the film “The Players Club”, the sitcom “All of Us” and the romantic comedy series “Single Ladies”.
The actress grew up on the south side of Chicago, where she attended St. James College Prep, Kenwood Academy before she moved on to Thornridge High School from where she graduated in 1985. The beautiful lady took her education further, attending Eastern Illinois University before going into acting.
LisaRaye McCoy welcomed a daughter, Kai Morae Pace, in 1989, from a former relationship with Kenji Pace.
For some unknown reasons, the all-white lover has not been lucky in marriage. She married Tony Martin in 1992 and two years later, they were divorced. In April 2006, she tied the knot with Michael Misick, the first-ever Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Unfortunately, their lavish wedding ceremony which had 300 guests in attendance and their three-week honeymoon to Jerusalem, Bali, and Dubai was no guarantee for a successful marriage. In August 2008, Premier Misick announced their divorce.
In July 2018, she appeared on ABC’s “The Proposal” and got engaged to sales representative Anthony Bryant. Sadly, their bliss was short-lived as the actress took to Instagram one month later to share with her followers that the engagement was off.
Boyfriend, Gay or Lesbian
Da Brat’s sexuality has been in question all through her career. She came into the music industry with her hit song ‘Funkdafied’ in the 90’s and without question, everybody concluded that she was a lesbian because she wore braids with saggy pants and big clothes.
However, her dressing alone was not a strong proof of her sexuality so people began asking questions but until now, there has been no straight answer from the horse’s mouth. Speaking of her experience in prison, Da Brat had said that the girls dressed in tight pants and got extra pretty just to get her attention but she did not and has never publicly stated that she was a lesbian.
In the 90’s she dated star basketball player, Allen Iverson, without hiding it. There were also rumors that she had a relationship with Keisha Spivey of the 90’s R&B group, Total. Recently, the rap queen was known to be dating David Gest, an American producer and television personality who died at the Four Seasons hotel in London, on 12 April 2016. Many people did not believe their relationship was real but that’s their opinion. The couple was seen kissing and smooching in public on different occasions.
Speaking in 2017 on the Rickey Smiley Dish Atlanta radio show, Da Brat revealed that Kirk Frost gave her 20 $100 bills with his number on it and also bought her a car to date him, and yes….she did! Kirk Frost is a singer-songwriter and rapper best known as a regular cast member of the reality series Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta.
We can easily conclude that Brat is bi-sexual but that would be too forward since she has never said it herself.
