Black is beautiful but when one part is darker than the rest of the body it can be less appealing.
A lot of people, especially Africans and Asians often have to deal with hyperpigmentation in their underarms, knees, elbows and even necks.
Most learn to live with it and see it as one of the things that come with being dark-skinned but for others who are conscious of their body it is quite tasking.
Some have to ditch wearing sleeveless clothes due to their darkened underarms which do not look aesthetically appealing. This can pose a problem during warm weathers as they find themselves in a dilemma, not knowing whether to risk it all and dress weather-appropriate or cover up this severely darkened spots.
It doesn’t even help matters that some of our favorite celebrities seem to have perfect skin tones that’s free of blemishes. We either point fingers at Photoshop or cite their big pockets which can afford the best skincare regimes as our excuse.
However, having an even-toned underarm doesn’t have to be expensive with these DIYs.
So what causes Dark Underarms?
The most common causes of dark underarms include; use of shaving sticks, accumulation of dead skin cells, alcohol-based deodorants and lack of proper ventilation.
How do you get rid of them ?
Say No To Shave Sticks
Shaving sticks and shaving creams only get rid of hairs that are just above the skin ‘s surface, this can give the appearance of a darkened underarm, Also the chemicals contained in shaving creams could worsen the effect. Stick to waxing instead.
If your dark underarms are a result of the build up of dead skin cells then exfoliation is the word. Exfoliation involves the removal of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface that clogs pores. It also helps remove toxins and improve the appearance of the skin.
Lemon is a natural cleanser as well as a natural bleach. Rub a slice of lemon on your darkened underarm before bathing. Lemon is drying so remember to moisturize or combine with humectants like honey. Do this at least thrice a week, there’s bound to be change in a month.
Irish potatoes can serve as a mild bleaching agent which wont irritate the skin like other strong natural bleaching agents. Apply a slice of potato and leave to dry for at least 10 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. Do this 1-2 times a day.
Cucumbers are another mild lightening agent. Rub a slice on your underarms and leave to dry for 10-15 minutes then rinse off with warm water.
Orange peels can act both as an exfoliant and as a lightening agent. The orange peel is usually dried and grounded, then added to rosewater and milk. Apply paste and leave on for about 15 minutes then rinse off with warm water.
