Nominations Are Now Open For The 2016 Nigerian Sports Awards


It is that time again for Nigerian sports fanatics to nominate their favourite Nigerian sportsman/ sportswoman for the annual Nigerian Sports Awards.

The chairman of the Nigerian Sports Awards committee, Mr. Ikeddy Isiguzo said to journalists on Tuesday that awards will be given only to the sportsperson with an exceptional performance.

“This is a very important aspect of the entire process,” Isiguzo said, pointing out that except an athlete or a team were nominated, no matter the exploit of such an athlete, the committee cannot, on its own reward such performances with an award. That is why I urge you, indeed, all Nigerians to nominate sportsmen and women of their choice for each category. Categories where there is no excellent performance, there will be no awards,” he declared.

The awards which officially opened for nominations on Tuesday will have19 categories.

The categories include;

Ball Sports Person of the Year (Tennis, Table tennis, Basketball, handball),

Coach of the Year,

Combat Sports Person of the Year (Karate,Judo, Taekwondo, Wrestling, Boxing),

Discovery of the Year

Footballer of the Year (Women)

Footballer of the Year (Men)

Special Sports Person of the Year

Sports Administrator of the Year

Sports Governor of the Year

Sportsman of the Year

Sportswoman of the Year

Sports Journalist of the Year (Radio),

Sports Journalist of the Year (TV)

Sports Journalist of the Year (Print)

Sports Photo Journalist of the Year

School Sport Award

Team of the Year

Track and Field Star of the Year

Weightlifter of the Year

The nominations will be closed on 23rd November in order for the result to be tallied ahead of the event. The event will be hosted at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos on 2 December 2016.

“We are very excited and planning to ensure that the 5th edition of the Nigerian Sports Award which is an anniversary edition is better than the past four editions not only about the award night event but also in all aspects of the awards from nominations, participation and attendance by the nominees,” Kayode Idowu, Executive Director of Unmissable Incentives Limited said.
