Diversity has become a big issue in the world today from films to toys. People want to see themselves represented on every front and although there is still a lot of ways to go in having representation for everyone to an acceptable level we are seeing a lot of progress and these vitiligo dolls are proof.
The strides made to diversify the selections in toys have been taken both by large toy manufacturers and individuals who understand the importance. They are the reason why we now have dolls that represent a variety of races, ethnicities and body types.
We have gotten the normally slim looking Barbie and Ken brands to include a spectrum of curvy, tall and hipster dolls. We also have more selections of dolls for different cultures, drag dolls and even dolls that represent people with albinism.
Now, Kay Black, a designer has started making custom dolls with vitiligo that we now know as vitiligo dolls. Black is one of the individuals who has been involved in making custom dolls that celebrate African-American beauty and culture. She, however, started getting requests from clients who have vitiligo.
Vitiligo is a disease that causes the loss of skin color in blotches. The extent and rate of color loss from vitiligo is unpredictable but it can affect the skin on any part of your body. It may also affect hair and the inside of the mouth. Vitiligo occurs when the cells that produce melanin die or stop functioning.
Vitiligo has been getting lots of attention recently thanks to outspoken vitiligo advocates such as model Winnie Harlow and viral posts like the one by Instagrammer Ash Soto, who turned her skin pattern into a world map.
Black’s dolls take on the vitiligo patterns of her clients. They send her a picture and can expect to get a beautiful custom doll with the skin that looks exactly like theirs.
