As terrifying as the statistics on hunger around the world are, food waste is still a thing. The World Food Day was celebrated this year on the 16th of October, 2017.

The marking of World Food Day 2017 brought to fore the terrifying statistics of world hunger which has risen for the first time in over a decade. Global hunger now affects 815 million people or 11 percent of the global population.

Pope Francis was one of the leaders of the world who came together to put the world in remembrance of the vital part we all need to play in tackling global hunger.

The increase in global hunger can be put at the feet of spring ups of violent conflicts around the world and climate-related problems. While those two things may need a larget body to mitigate and control, there are some things that are within the power of the individual to do, to kick global hunger.

Over time, an estimate of what your household is able to consume will become apparent to you. This knowledge should be used to make shopping lists that should only include what you actually need and can handle. Do not buy over what you can handle just because there is more income or because you feel like.

Learn About Portion Sizes

There is always a tendency to keep heaping on food until your plate is full but a better option would be to be moderate by following portion sizes. To help with this, you can avoid large plates and instead use smaller plates that will help you eat less.

Buy Containers For Properly Storing Food

You can save food that you cannot finish by storing them in your fridge or freezer. But proper containers that will enable you to do this effectively. This will also help you stretch out food for longer periods and therefore save you some money and time.

Know What Is In Your Fridge

As much as you are storing containers in your fridge or freezer, you need to actually know what is in the fridge. If you fail to remember the food that you store at the back of the fridge, they may get too old in your estimation and that may lead to you disposing of them. Move the older products to the front of the fridge and keep the new products at the back, so you can consume the older ones first.

Donate Food You No Longer Want

A better option than tossing unwanted food is donating them. You can donate unwanted food to food banks for people or even donate scraps and other types of food to farms and companies to feed livestock.
