Angus Young’s Bio
Born as Angus Mckinnon Young on the 31st of March 1995 in Glasglow Scotland, Angus was a child born into a poor home. He resided with his family in Glasgow and began working at quite an early age as a machine and saw operator for a cement and asbestos processing company. He also worked as a wheel boy. Regarding his education, Angus schooled at Ashfield Boys High school but opted out at the age of 15.
Growing into an adult who worked hard for every penny, Angus served as a flight engine mechanic with the Royal Air Force during World War 2 in 1940. When the war ended, he worked as a yardman and as a postman. Meanwhile, his family was noted for their interest in music with all his brothers having gained expertise in playing various musical instruments. On his part, Angus’ hands fitted well on the guitar and he also had an ear for the right musical rhymes while playing the Banjo. Sources say that his mom got him his first guitar and later in 1970, he purchased a second hand Gibson SG from the few pennies he had saved.
Angus Young’s first experience as a music artist apart from the combos he played with his brothers was with a group known as Katuckee. The group consisted of vocalist Bob McGlynn, bassist Jon Stevens, and drummer Trevor James. Sadly, the group was disbanded leading to Young’s decision to join the Tantrums. He never played with the Tantrums for long and moved ahead to join the band, Marcus Hook Roll Band; a band formed by one of his brothers.
With his new band, he released his first album, Tales of Old Grand-Daddy in 1973 and in the same year, he left the group to create a group known as AC/DC with his other brother, Malcolm Young. There, Angus Young played as the band’s lead guitarist and they later recruited other people to the group including bassist Larry Van Kriedt, drummer Collin Burgess and vocalist Dave Evans.
In trying to look different from the rest of his bandmates, Angus took up different costumes when on stage. He sometimes appeared in a Gorilla, Spiderman or Zoro outfit and he also tried a parody of Superman called Super-Ang. Later on, he started to appear in his former high school uniform on stage.
With AC/DC, he released his album, High Voltage which was also the group’s debut album. Following the next years, the group took to tours and performing live while traveling through different cities, states and countries. They later released a few other albums including T.N.T., Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, Let There Be Rock, Powerage, Highway to Hell and so many more!
Currently, the band has lost a few members of the crew and following Malcolm Young’s retirement, Angus Young became the oldest member of the crew. Meanwhile, the band has recorded a lot of successes over the years and was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2003. In 2004, they were rated as the 72nd position on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of 100 greatest artists of all time while VH1 ranked the team as the 23rd position on the 100 greatest artists of all time and number 4 in their list of the 100 greatest artists of hard rock.
