Before joining the ABC television network, Stephanopoulos worked as a political analyst. He had served on the Clinton/Gore presidential campaign as the Deputy Campaign Manager and then went on to work as the White House Director of Communications. He also later served as Clinton’s senior aide and advisor for policy and strategy.

Who is George Stephanopoulos?

George Stephanopoulos was born to parents of Greek descent; Very Reverend Robert George Stephanopoulos and Nickolitsa Gloria Stephanopoulos on the 10th of February, 1961 in Fall River, Massachusetts. George Sr. is the Dean at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in New York and is also a Greek Orthodox priest.

Stephanopoulos attended high school in Cleveland, Ohio and then went on to study political science at Columbia University in New York. He graduated with a summa cum laude bachelor of arts degree and was class salutatorian at his graduation ceremony. In 1983, he attended Balliol College at the University of Oxford, England and graduated with a masters degree in Theology a year later.

Following the end of his program at Oxford, Stephanopoulos returned to the United States and settled in Washington, D.C. to begin his career in politics. He first worked as an aide to Ohio Democratic Congressman, Ed Feighan. After his work with Feighan, he moved on to work for the campaign of American presidential aspirant, Michael Dukakis in 1988, a campaign which did not end in success. George Stephanopoulos did not rejoin the presidential staff after the re-election of the president in 1996. He stated in his best-selling book, All Too Human: A Political Education, that he battled depression due to the excessive demands that his role required. The book is simply an account of his time spent with Bill Clinton, from the campaign to his first term in office.

After his run with the White House, Stephanopoulos moved to journalism, specifically broadcasting. He joined ABC as a political analyst for the show segment This Week, which was hosted by another duo at the time.  He took over as the anchor for the show in 2002 which then became This Week with George Stephanopoulos, and he was named Chief Washington Correspondent three years later.

In 2010, Christiane Amanpour replaced him as host of The Week, but Stephanopoulos returned to show in early 2012. He also corresponded on World News Tonight and Good Morning America. In 2009, he became co-anchor of Good Morning America alongside Robin Roberts.

Stephanopoulos has further had a brief stint in pop culture. He was referred to in the popular sitcom Friends in 1994. However, the episode titled The One with George Stephanopoulos did not feature him onscreen. He was the basis for the character Lewis Rothchild in the movie The American President (1995), and also for the character Henry Burton in the movie Primary Colors (1998).
